I think I’m paranoid.

(And now the Garbage song is playing in my head.)

Imagine this:

I’m alone in the house innocently watching YouTube clips on the PC when somebody outside is gently rapping on the gate saying “Tao po…!”

I sneak a peek out the window to see: It’s a man. And 3 other men standing near him, waiting.

I open the door, step out and say, “Ano po yun?” (“What is it?”)

I step nearer to the gate, not opening it, allowing the one guy, who seemed to be their leader, to talk to me.

He says they’re the guys from the phone company, checking on a report for the phone line, waving a piece of paper in front of my face (slipped in through the slots between the gate grill — I refuse to open it!) showing the authenticity of his claims.

Hmm, I think, yes, we had in fact reported the phone line, but it had been fixed days ago.

Okay, I think, with that paper and that ugly vehicle with the ladder awkwardly placed on top, he may just be telling the truth. But, even so, something was nagging at me. I think I was worried for my personal safety.

I do not know what to say… So, flustered, I buy myself time and I say, “Um. Wait lang.” I then rush indoors and dial my mom’s office number. (See, the phone’s working fine.)

“Mom,” I say, “there are 4 guys wanting to come in…” and proceed to explain. I didn’t so much call to ask my mom’s permission but rather wanted her to validate what seemed like my understandable discomfort. I had wanted her to tell me to tell them to go away and come back at a later time. And that’s what she told me to do. (Yay, mom!)

So I did.

The workmen plead, saying they have to finish this job today, one of them even saying “Ma’am, isa lang po sa’min papasok sa bahay n’yo.” (“Only one of us is going to go inside the house.”) — to which I almost said “Are you fucking kidding me?!” I instead say something along the lines of “No, sorry, come back either at a later time today or another day altogether, ok? Thanks.”

And after a little bit of a debate, they left, deflated. And I, triumphant, went back to my computer and Plurked about it.

The End

And now, the violent reaction: Legit or not, do these companies not know how scary it would be for a girl to allow 4 strange men into her house? I mean, COME ON. That has the news written all over it. Or lame-ass suspense thriller horror B-movie with obviously fake blood and lousy special effects where all the characters end up dead. Whichever one — either way, it’s not good.

I did not watch all those infomercials when I was a kid in the 90’s for nothing. Strangers, I totally kick your ass with my well-placed (?) paranoia! Ohyeah!

  2. uy a similar thing happened to me, except that there are a few people at the house at the time with me. but i had them wait a while and made usisa on their names and company and their pldt contact just to give them the works. then they did the fixing. and came back. and i was alone at the time, but did not clue them in. anyway, obviously it was a little more legit than i first thought/feared, and my example may not be the best behavior, and always err on the side of caution i think.

  3. That happened to me as well… in the US! I’m not being racist, pero it scared me to death to see a huge Af-Am guy banging on the front door. Ang liit ko compared sa kanila.

Mas paranoid pa ko sayo. Wala kasing gate dun, so I had the house phone in my hand and I was actually about to reach for the broom kasi I heard it’s like they were trying to open the door protecting the DOOR. I was hiding behind the stairs and had the phone ready to dial 911. (Eto praning talaga diba.)

But then, I’m glad you didn’t let them in. Una pa lang, they sounded suspicious na.

  4. Dude, good thing you didnt let them in -_- Christ, that’s scary. When I’m alone at home (which is barely…almost never lol) and summady’s at the gate, I ignore.

  5. You either saved yourself from rapists or you denied a day’s meal for 4 starving families. Either way, GOOD JOB! :D

  6. WTH freaky shit. You should’ve just let them rot outside your house, I wouldn’t have let them in in the first place if that happened to me. :|

  7. sometimes, paranoia is a good thing.

    1. the phone company could have or should have called you up and informed you that there will be 4 people going to your house to fix your phone.

    2. ano pa aayusin nila e gawa na nga phone niyo?

    3. why would they insist to fix your phone if it’s already fixed? why would they insist that they have to finish the job that day e wala na nga silang gagawin? ayaw ba nila no’n, bawas trabaho na sa kanila?

    4. they should have shown you an ID to prove that they are indeed from the phone company. kung medyo kaduda-duda pa rin kahit may ID, puwede kang tumawag do’n sa company to double-check kung employee nga sila do’n.

  9. @Ade: Ew I don’t want to get in contact with any “yagbols.” -_-;; *shudder*

@undercrisis, Ea & Cindy: For the record lang, they were legit. After I didn’t let them in, the phone company called and asked if may dumaan and if nacheck blah blah blah. But still. 4 men vs. me is SCARY noh. And Ea, thanks for the tips. :)

@Helga: I will na nga din next time. Hahaha. Hassle eh.

    @baddie: Shaddap. =(

@Anna O: OMG. Hahaha. So what happened and what was it that the big scary dude needed??

@Kris: Nooooooo! OLD MEN. Ew. Naexperience mo na ‘to noh? ;p

  10. I say it’s ok to be paranoid about these kinds of things!!
    Times are different now,
and besides, things change when you get older,
you don’t believe in monsters no more, instead
you think people can be monsters!!
