What comes after Call Centering?

As some may know, I am a Customer Service Representative at a Call Center, or a job that is more commonly known as Call Center Agent. (Pronounced Kawl Sehhnnner AGE-uhnt)

Unbelievably, I’ve been at this job for over a year now.

And after over a year of having to work nights, with weird days off, and without many holidays, and taking these stupid calls day in, day out night in, night out with stupid customers asking the same stupid questions… I’m getting bored. (And I’m getting stupid. Have I mentioned that?)

But almost the same thing that’s making me want to leave is the same reason I stay:

Where else can I get paid well to answer questions you can answer by just looking at the facts already displayed on the computer screen?

We’re overpaid and underworked and anyone who can speak okay English and manage the weird vampiric schedule can take this job, no sweat.

I get the money to satisfy my superficial needs easily and for, seriously speaking, helping out around the house and taking some of the weight of The Mom’s shoulders. I love it also for the (mostly) wonderful people I’ve met here. And yes, I love it for the money I can get from it. Money that I want and need. But still.

  1. Gah. I know what you mean. I left call centers back in March. I miss the money, but I love actually being required to think in my job (hey, there’s an opening here if you’re interested). But I am so fucking tempted to go back.

  2. I wonder if there’s a job swap (a la Wife Swap) kind of thing. Maybe we can do that for a week! I can do your job and you can do mine and we’ll learn new things and cry on national TV!
Oh, and an opening for what, exactly? :D

  3. To be part of the Marketing Team for, well, a big local web company. Buzz me on YM if ever. :)

  4. Mind me for butting in, though I think I know where Ade works. Sorry, you may not know me but I saw your pop-up ad upon login of my blog. So yes, I have an account there. :)

@ Jung again: Ah… call centering… have I told you? Or perhaps not? But yes. I understand what you mean in the most literal sense. Believe it or not, yes. The job makes you a little stupider and a little richer everyday. Hay.

  5. “Getting stupid” wass the complaint of some of my college buddies who worked in a call center while waiting for the board results.

..and I understand what you mean even if I’m the opposite, overworked but underpaid. LOL. Our feelings are the same. I want to search for “greener pastures”.

  6. @Anna O: Have you told me what? Are you working in one of these places too??

@KC: The search for greener pastures, and a nice even balance between work and pay. At least working here has allowed me the luxury of buying my books. It even pushed me back into reading, in my desire to feel smart again. :)

  7. @ Jung: I haven’t told you, or anyone else aside from those I regularly get to see, but my answer to your Q is Yes. Even my Multiply blog isn’t saying where I work… but yes. Proof is my pseudo-British accent. Lol.

  8. Ahaaaaaa. Innneresting! So you’ve joined the trend too! :D
Alabang?! Or… We can’t very well chitchat here. Haha. I’ll message you on Multiply. :)
